State Senator Ray Musto hailed the new
Pittston City Riverfront Park as a new beginning for the municipality.
Senator Musto addressed the crowd at the
dedication ceremony for the new park held on May 10. Federal, state and local
officials joined present and former city officeholders at the ribbon-cutting
ceremony at the park, which is along the bank of the Susquehanna River. In
addition, numerous city residents attended the event.
“This is just the beginning. You’re
going to see even more development in the city of Pittston,” said Musto, who
was instrumental in attaining state funding for the $650,000 project. The
legislator introduced John Plonski, executive deputy secretary of the state
Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, who praised officials’
cooperation in obtaining funding for the project.
Senator Musto’s sentiments were also
voiced by Pittston Mayor Michael Lombardo, who said, “There’s a lot more to
come; this is just a start.”
Former City Councilman James
Kolmansberger recognized Senator Musto’s role in the development of the park.
He mentioned that city officials met with the senator in 1988 to discuss the
possibility and received Senator Musto’s encouragement and support.
The development of the park took 15
years, according to officials. The area includes an amphitheater, which was
named after former Mayor Thomas Walsh; walkways and art work.
The main entrance is near the intersection of Kennedy Boulevard and the Water Street Bridge. There’s also access for the physically challenged behind Cooper’s Restaurant on Kennedy Boulevard.
