Senator Musto honored by Pennsylvania Wildlife Federation
Lancaster, PA April 18, 2000
State Senator Ray Musto was called the most influential environmental legislator of the last decade at a statewide conservation group's annual banquet Tuesday night.
The Pennsylvania Wildlife Federation selected the Luzerne County Democrat as the "Conservation Legislator of the Year 2000" for his activities and achievements on behalf of the conservation of the state's natural resources.
"Senator Musto has championed for environmental protection without concern for party affiliation," said Dr. Noel Falk, the federation's chairman.
"He has been able to bring both parties and legislative bodies together in achieving most of the environmental legislation we have seen over the last ten years."
The remarks came as Musto was honored Tuesday night at the wildlife federation's annual banquet, which was conducted at the Eden Resort, Lancaster.
Musto, who represents the 14th Senatorial District, has authored some of Pennsylvania's landmark environmental legislation, including the state's curbside recycling program, which is the largest in the country. He is the longtime Democratic chairman of the senate's Environmental Resources and Energy Committee.
Clifford Jones, former secretary of the state Department of Environmental Resources, spoke about Musto's role in developing Pennsylvania's "Growing Greener" plan, which will invest nearly $650 million in Pennsylvania's environment over the next five years.
"Let me say this, Senator Musto was responsible for the addition of $100 million to this initiative," Jones said. "He deserves this great honor."
Wilkes-Barre Mayor Thomas McGroarty was on hand to present Musto with a key to the city in a tribute to the senator's achievements. McGroarty praised Musto for his efforts, especially his instrumental role in obtaining funds for the city's award-winning recycling program.
Senator Musto said he was honored to be chosen for such a prestigious award. "I'm pleased at this kind of recognition, of course, " said Musto. "But more needs to be done.
"The next hurdle is always the most challenging one and I look forward to continuing our work on behalf of this tremendous cause."
The lawmaker has sponsored numerous pieces of legislation, including Clean Air amendments; the hazardous materials program; and a statewide environmental education program for school students. In addition, he co-sponsored the Land Recycling Act, which has won national awards.
The federation's mission is to educate Pennsylvanians about the environment and to protect, preserve and nurture the state's natural resources.
