Mayor McGroarty thanks Senator Musto for assisting city in receiving recycling grants from DEP.

The City of Wilkes-Barre has received two recycling grants from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.

The first grant is for $360,000 and has enabled the City to purchase five new trucks to be used for recycling services.  Of the five new trucks, four of them are unique in that they are smaller trucks that can more easily navigate the small streets and alleys prevalent throughout the City, especially in the Heights section.

The fifth truck is a large traditional recycling truck.  Although touted as the more efficient of the trucks, it can only be used on very large streets due to its size.  As a result, it will only be used in certain areas of the City that can accommodate its size.

In addition to the trucks, the City received funding for its very popular City calendar that lists all the of the City services for the year.

The second grant that the City received was also from PADEP.  This grant is for $100,000 and will fund the purchase of reusable containers for the collection of yard waste.  The City has ordered approximately 15,000 containers and has taken delivery of about half that number.  After the Fourth of July celebration, the City will begin delivery to be complete by the end of July.

“I would like to that Senator Ray Musto for his aid in assisting the City obtain these grants.  We would not have been able to be so successful in these endeavors without his ever-present support.  Over the years, he has assisted the City in developing one of the best recycling programs in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.  I can’t thank him enough,” commented Mayor McGroarty.
